Abstract | When Portugal returned the city to the People’s Republic of China in 1999, Macau was the last remaining European territory in Asia. Over the next two decades, however, Macau metamorphosed into the most lucrative site of casino gaming in global history. This talk charts Macau’s remarkable contemporary renaissance and explores the city’s regime of casino capitalism, analyzing the animal spirits of Macau’s baccarat-based economy, and the formative role of the city’s massive megaresorts in cultivating calculating consumer citizens for China’s reform era. |
