Abstract | This research examines the masculine and feminine characteristics exhibited by the male and female leads in five popular Chinese television costume dramas aired between 2011 and 2019. Using a Chinese perspective of hegemonic masculinity as the theoretical framework, we examined media representations of gender hegemony. Results show that traditional gender images and patriarchal gender relations are generally endorsed in this specific drama genre, even though the portrayal of female leads demonstrates a certain level of masculinity (e.g., independence). Our study is likely the first to use a framework of hegemonic masculinity/femininity to analyze Chinese TV dramas with both quantitative and qualitative investigations. The findings suggest Chinese costume dramas reinforce hegemonic gender relations despite some minor progress influenced by modern feminism. |
