AbstractThis Keynote is the third academic lecture in the author’s thoroughgoing reassessment of Tolkien and race, and follows directly from the paper ‘A Reconsideration of Race in The Lord of the Rings’. The secret of Tolkien’s literary style is a particular technique that has been comprehensively overlooked by scholars and critics in the field, yet it not only accounts for his presentation of different species and race, but also reveals an aspect of his writing that not only reaffirms his contemporary significance but demands that his oeuvre now be reread in light of this new interpretation.
