Abstract

The chapter examines the social rise of the 'aristocratic vampire' by comparing eighteenth-century accounts of vampire outbreaks with the early literary history of the figure in Germany and Britain, focusing on a run of publications in 1819 and theatre performances in Britain and France in the 1820s.
