Abstract | We report in this study an empirical investigation of the effects of uncertain input prices and induced innovation on China’s productivity growth based on Appelbaum and Kohli’s (1997) approach. Particularly, we estimate the input price uncertainty by the multivariate autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity method and embed this within an expected utility maximizing model. We further extend the model by allowing for asymmetric input demand responses to input price induced innovation and then test alternative assumptions in this respect. The results indicate that the overall impact of uncertainty is significant but small. While the hypothesis of asymmetric induced innovation effects is supported by the data, we find that wage and oil price induced innovation is the main engine of productivity growth in China. |
