Abstract | In his book The Vampire: A New History (Yale University Press, 2018), the author Nick Groom coined the word ‘vampirocene’ as analogous to the ‘anthropocene’. The vampirocene is an era in which ‘the human race has transformed the world, but in doing so has also lost its primacy’ (p. 202); it is ‘nihilocentric’. This neologism has inspired a books of essays, for which this will be the Foreword. The paper will develop the definition of the word as a critical and theoretical term. |
