Abstract | Overseas imperial expansion gave European conflicts a global dimension. Commodore George Anson brought the War of Jenkins’s Ear (1739-1748) to China. Tasked with harassing Spanish settlements and shipping in the Pacific, Anson visited China twice, once in 1742 and again the following year after capturing the famed Manila galleon. Half a century before Lord Macartney’s historic visit, Anson made diplomatic overtures to China and sought to implicate it in the international order. This paper will assess Chinese perspectives of Anson’s activities and argue that engaging with non-European and non-belligerent sources provides an important but often neglected lens with which to view globalizing wars and assess their impacts. China was not passive in face of the maritime threat from an ascendant British empire. Anson’s visit triggered administrative and defence reforms and a reassessment of China’s foreign policy. Inquiry into Anson’s activities provided China with important intelligence about the outside world. Qing officials used this knowledge to maintain a flourishing foreign trade in a rapidly changing world order, a feat with much relevance in today’s geopolitical climate. |
