Abstract | This research examines the evolving dynamics of media representation of women in the context of the #MeToo movement, focusing specifically on China's Southern Weekly. Using content analysis, the study investigates shifts in the portrayal of women in media narratives from 2017 to 2019, covering the year before, during, and after the rise of #MeToo in China. The analysis reveals a paradoxical representation in "women reports," depicting women both as prestigious professionals and vulnerable victims, reflecting complex and often contradictory narratives about female identity. The research also identifies a restraint in reporting the active roles and empowerment of ordinary women, with a significant decrease in agency framing, potentially perpetuating traditional stereotypes of passivity. This trend is juxtaposed against Southern Weekly's alignment with progressive societal voices and the constraints of the authoritarian state, illustrating the nuanced interplay between media, social movements, and state policies. |
