Abstract | Arguably, a sense of identity (on both an individual and collective level) can be constructed by means of various “technologies,” including “sincerity,” “authenticity,” and “profilicity.” Sincerity is characterised by an orientation to social roles, for instance traditional gender roles, or roles in organizations such as families or religious communities. In sincerity, honest commitment to roles validates selfhood. Yet, to authenticity the orientation to roles appears as conformity; instead of role expectations, it emphasizes the pursuit of originality. Here, real personhood is to be found in just being oneself. Different from authenticity, in profilicity identity is based on the curation and display of profiles and achieved through social validation feedback loops. New media and digital technologies significantly enhance the proliferation of profiles and enable true investment in profiles. Profilic identity, for instance on social media is still commonly described in the language of authenticity and often disqualified as inauthentic, or, in some cases, praised as authentic True investment in profiles, however, is neither authentic nor inauthentic, but non- or post-authentic. This paper presents a preliminary description of what it is like to be truly invested on social media. |
