Geopolymer extruded composites with incorporated fly ash and polyvinyl alcohol short fiber

AbstractA polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) short-fiber-reinforced fly ash geopolymer composite manufactured by extrusion technique (SFRFGC) was developed in this study. The effects of fly ash content and fiber volume fraction on the rheological and flexural behaviors of SFRFGC were systematically investigated. The experimental results show that for normally-cured SFRFGC, the addition of PVA fiber greatly increases the ductility of SFRFGC, especially in the case of high-volume fractions of fiber, which results in a change of SFRFGCs failure mode from a brittle pattern to a ductile one. In contrast, the addition of fly ash exhibits an important influence on the rhelogical and flexural behaviors. The spherical shape of fly ash can obviously improve the extrudability of fresh SFRFGC pastes. SFRFGC without and with a low percentage of fly ash has very high flexural strength and low deflection. On the other hand, SFRFGC with a high percentage of fly ash has a low flexural strength but a large deflection. The failure mechanism was also investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM).
