Abstract | An experimental study of the interfacial zone between aggregate and cement paste was undertaken. Various factors such as type of aggregate, treatment of aggregate surface, mixing process and incorporation of silica fume were investigated. A newly developed push-out method continuously measured force and slip displacement of the interface during loading. The interfacial properties of the transition zone were characterized using a mathematical model and the microstructure of the interface was examined by electron microscopy. It was found that the microstructure and properties of the interfacial zone can be significantly improved by aggregate pretreatment and mixing methods. |
