AbstractIn nearly twenty years, I have had a continuous and illuminating collaboration with Prof. Wayman. This collaboration encompasses a fairly wide range of materials systems and topics; it continues on even today. Over this period we have jointly published more than a dozen articles and shared much fun and excitement in our continuing pursuit of understanding in martensitic phase transformations as well as in other areas of common interest. We worked together with joint students, research associates and visiting scholars; we attended and even organized conferences and meetings together, here in the United States as well as in Europe and Japan. Our recent collaboration took us to the investigation of ceramic materials that show promising shape memory effect and/or interesting phenomena associated with displacive phase transformations. This paper is a tribute to our lasting friendship and collaboration, for which a chronological account of our joint ventures will be given that ranged from Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys, to Au-Fe spin-glasses, to Fe-based shape memory alloys, and to ceramics undergoing displacive transformations.
