Abstract | Syntheses of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a vertical tube furnace were performed through the thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The process adopted xylene, ferrocene, and thiophene as carbon precursor, catalyst, and promoter, respectively. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in the forms of fluff or long strand were obtained. The microstructure of the synthesized CNTs which is very sensitive to the flow pattern of the decomposed precursors was characterized using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Raman spectroscope. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of the composites made from the synthesized MWCNTs and SWCNTs were tested. Furthermore, the comparisons of EMI shielding properties among the composites reinforced with sole reinforcement (SWCNTs or MWCNTs) or hybrid reinforcements (Ni powder and CNTs) were made. |
