Abstract | An increasing number of mental health clinicians are communicating electronically with their patients. This communication increases the risk of compromising patient confidentiality. The authors specifically sampled 141 psychologists and student trainees from a cognitive- behavioral organization via online surveying about technology use as well as electronic security breaches. For the subset of 98 respondents involved in clinical care, the authors further inquired about electronic patient communication use and whether clinicians routinely use appropriate safeguards to ensure patient confidentiality. One-third to one-half of clinicians reported communicating electronically with patients by exchanging email and text messages. Depending on type of method, one-fifth to one-half reported using unsecure methods of electronic patient communication that can compromise confidentiality/patient anonymity. Older clinicians were more likely to electronically communicate with patients. Female clinicians were more likely to password-protect their phones. Findings suggest a sizable proportion of clinicians may not be adequately securing their electronic communications, putting patient privacy at risk. |
