Other Abstract
In Tim Choy's Ecologies of Comparison, we are introduced to environmental politics in Hong Kong, a world of competing claims, definitions, and practices. Choy brings us into this world through ethnographic snippets of his experiences and historical sidebars that introduce the reader to Hong Kong in the 1990s. From the offices of Greenpeace to community meetings in regional fishing villages that have been turned into sites for ecotourism and retirement communities, we witness ways in which locals and international organizations make sense of Hong Kong's environment. Choy's ethnographic presence is felt throughout as he recounts his participation in environmental protests, dinner parties, and the mundane routines of office work. This presence does not overwhelm the book, it serves as an ethnographic strategy for studying the ways in which comparison is used to make sense of the environment and life within it.
