Abstract | This paper presents an experimental study on the behaviour of screw connections for high strength low ductility cold-formed steel. The current Northern American and Australia/New Zealand specification for cold-formed steel have not considered the effect of different arrangements of screws in a screwconnection on the connection strength. A total of 132 test specimens were tested in this study. The main focus of this study is the effect of screwarrangements. Different numbers of rows and columns were studied to verify theinfluence of screw arrangements on the connection strength. The failure modes of all test specimens were recorded. The failure modes observed were mainly tilting and bearing failures. The failure loads were compared with the calculated result using North American Standard (NAS) and Australian/New Zealand (AS/NZS) code design equations. The predicted strengths were computed using material properties obtained from tensile coupon test. Number of rows and symmetry arrangements are found to have significant effect onconnection strength. |
