Abstract | Creative characteristics (CC), though with worldwide recognition of its importance, have been found with differences in perspectives between the east and the west, and the measurement of creativity is diverse. Therefore, the aims of this study are to (1) develop a Performing Creative Characteristics Scale (PCCS) and provide support for its use in measuring young Chinese children's creative characteristics, (2) investigate the differences between presuming and performing CC using PCCS through teachers’ and parents’ ratings. There were two samples from two cities in China with 493 kindergarten and primary school students, their parents, and teachers from Macau, and 430 students in kindergarten and primary schools as well as their teachers from Guizhou. The results showed that the PCCS had good reliability of internal consistency and internal content validity, and is thus, a suitable instrument in measuring young Chinese children's creative characteristics. Differences between presuming and performing CC were found, more specifically, some CC items that were perceived as important and relevant to creativity were not performed well by the young children, and vice versa. Furthermore, a continuum pattern of eastern to western perspective of CC using the four domains in PCCS was revealed in the sequence of Chinese, Macau, Hong Kong, and Western domains, with Western and Hong Kong domains being more related to creativity. Implications and significance of these results were discussed. |
