Abstract

One methodological issue in tonal acousticanalyses is revisited and resolved in this study.Previous tone normalization methods mainlyserved for categorizing tones but did not aim topreserve sociolinguistic variation. This study, from the perspective of variationist studies, reevaluates the effectiveness of sixteen tonenormalization methods and finds that the besttone normalization method is a semitonetransformation relative to each speaker'saverage pitch in hertz.
