Experimental study on the final jump phase in long air gap discharges

Abstract

The final jump is an essential process of long air gap discharge. This paper will focus on the experimental study on the characteristics of the final jump stage under positive switching and lightning impulses in the long air gaps. To demonstrate the propagation of the leader, a high-speed camera (FASTCAM SAX2) was used to record. The lightning impulse (1.9/50 μs) that was produced by a 7.2 MV Marx generator applied to the 3 m or 5 m air gaps. By looking at the results for the gaps as mentioned above; the observation results showed that the average final jump length under lightning impulse is 1.06 m and 1.91 m, respectively. The average velocity during the final jump phase under positive switching and lightning impulses is obtaining from the observation images by fitting the measurements. According to the discharge images, the method to calculate the length and velocity during the final jump stage. Finally, the current under the lightning impulse voltage is thousands of amperes as compared to switching impulse.
