Border writing is the practice of writing that involves the metaphor of border crossing, be it the border of languages, cultures, genders, or memories, prompting readers to rethink established labels and experience in-betweenness of border identity. Transnational graphic novels are a special form of border writing that blurs an additional border between word and picture, integrating interlingual, intralingual, and intersemiotic translation in the same text. This research investigates Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese and explores how it expresses the anxiety, polysemy, and complexity of multicultural identity with its border-crossing narratives. In particular, the research focuses on the author’s rewriting of a Chinese novel, The Journey to the West, and the Bible, and discusses how the author transforms the two and merges them into a hybrid narrative, linguistically and graphically, as a metaphor of border identity. Then, the research focuses on the characters’ names, which are polysemous and ambiguous, and argues that theses playful names deconstruct the traditional binary mindset that causes self-hatred among border crossers and stereotypes from the dominant culture. The graphic novel, with the hybrid and multimodal narrative and the playful names, overturns the depressing status of border identity and highlights its infinite possibilities.
