Abstract	Content based similarity measure is the approach to evaluate the similarity levels among different models based on the content of the models instead of the text descriptions. With the drive of customized and optimized product development, there is a trend to use 3D models as key elements of product specification and as a source for various downstream applications. Similarity measure of 3D models is critical for the effective retrieval of similar part for analysis and reusage from a product database. A growing number of competing similarity evaluation methods for 3D models has been reported in the past. Great efforts have been taken to improve their accuracy and efficiency, which is tested by benchmarking experiments. More recently, the new approaches, called multi-measures, which blended several effective single measures with weights are introduced. In this paper, we survey these various efforts in proposing methods for similarity measures in comparison, this paper extends the research domain to cover the complicated models with holes and internal boundary. The paper will draw a scheme of categorization of different measures, and point out their advantages, disadvantages and application fields respectively. The research directions are also discussed in the conclusion for future development. Copyright©(2008) by Computers & Industrial Engineering.
