Abstract | Due to the inherent ambiguities in natural languages, the parsing of a sentence in any Machine Translation System may generate different ambiguous parse trees, and the categorical constituents of each tree are often nested with each other. Since this phenomenon is unpredictable and difficult to deal with, the parsing of these sentences, especially for long ones, is very easy to get failed when analyzed, and easy to produce poor translations. As a result, a preprocessing module is proposed for systematically chunking Noun Phrases. This paper describes the modeling of Noun Phrases based on Constraint Synchronous Grammar formalism, with emphasis in its application to Portuguese-Chinese Machine Translation. This formalism can model not only syntactic structures of two languages simultaneously, but also express detailed feature structures of the languages. © ICITA 2009. |
