Abstract | In Chinese folk religion, some deities are spread among fishermen, and therefore are often identified as fishermen’s worship, such as Tangong and Hongsheng Dawang, two deities popular among fishermen in the Guangdong area. Tangong is a local deity absent in canonical scriptures; whereas Hongsheng Dawang is derived from the God of the Southern Sea worshiped in the state ritual. The history of the complex identities and functions of these two deities reflect two different modes of how gods are created and developed in Chinese folk religion. Tangong represents a mode, in which a local territory deity can be transformed into a god of fishermen, certain profession, clan, or can even be officially recognized by the state. Hongsheng represents another mode, in which a state god was re-shaped in folk religion. Both of these deities were transmitted to Hong Kong and Macau. This study, on one hand, clarifies the cult of the two in these areas; however more importantly, through investigating the history of the worship of these two gods, it reveals common nature of god worship between village residents and fishermen, as well as between the state and common folks. |
