AbstractMacao is well known as the “Monte Carlo of the Orient,” with 35 casinos and many other gaming facilities. In spite of the high availability of various forms of offline gambling, internet gambling may remain attractive to many gamblers due to its characteristics such as anonymity and convenience. Because relevant research is scarce, this study aims to examine (1) Macao public perceptions of internet gambling, (2) prevalence of internet gambling in Macao, and (3) internet gamblers’ characteristics and addiction symptoms when compared to non-internet gamblers. We recruited more than 950 Chinese adults of both genders by a random residential number dialing method to form a representative adult sample. The results of some preliminary analyses showed that about 5% of respondents preferred online gambling than offline gambling, and 4% of those past-year gamblers had participated in internet gambling. The major reasons for such preference included less geographic/time restriction and fast betting rate. A positive correlation was also observed between internet gambling and addiction symptoms. The findings not only supported that internet gamblers were more vulnerable to gambling addiction but also provided insights on how to improve preventive measures in Chinese communities.
