AbstractThrough qualitative case study methodology, we investigated how the China-based subsidiaries of two foreign-based MNCs cooperated with local actors to identify, evaluate and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities. Focusing on subsidiary engagement with the host country environment of an emerging economy (the PRC) as a source of collaborative advantage, we identified four processes of external engagement: sensing, enacting, embedding and leveraging, each of which depended upon close collaboration with locally based external stakeholders. Our unique contribution is to show how the two subsidiaries developed their entrepreneurial power through external embeddedness and thereby created the potential for knowledge dissemination to their respective headquarters (HQ) or sister subsidiaries.
