AbstractWe shall begin this chapter with an overview of prior research into organizational learning that has primarily focused on learning in the context of organizations located in the continent of Asia. From this, we have excluded two important bodies of work. One of these comprises studies of organizational learning in Israel (e.g., Amitaj, Popper & Lipshitz, 2006, and Naot, Lipshitz, & Popper, 2004), since this nation is typically characterized as European, although it is geographically located in Asia. The other omission concerns studies of Japanese owned organizations operating on Japanese soil. In part two, we shall switch focus to consider the Japanese-in-Japan studies, and, in particular, Ikujiro Nonaka’s theory of knowledge creation. Noting that it has been difficult to apply that theory outside Japan, in part three, we shall consider cultural and institutional features that apply more generally across Asia, and their implications for a pan-Asian theory of organizational learning.
