AbstractA variety of approaches to, and perspectives on, evil were developed and refined during the first half of the twentieth century. The period saw the maturation of intellectual trends, such as Pragmatism, Phenomenology and Existentialism, as well as the full emergence of new academic disciplines, such as Psychology and the science of Education. Each of these provided novel intellectual tools better to understand the human capacity for evil that was becoming increasingly hard to ignore in both the West and the East as the century unfolded. An underlying theme of the volume will be the post-Nietzschean effort to reconstruct an understanding of human nature after confidence in its intrinsic goodness and moral character had been shaken by current events. Chapters will highlight efforts to comprehend human nature, mould it for the better through education, “improve” it through eugenics, manipulate it through propaganda, control it through power and oppression, and ultimately do away with it through genocide. The volume also considers more explicitly theological responses to evil, such as those developed by seminal figures such as Karl Barth, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Karl Rahner, as well as the contribution of the “death of God” theologians. The final chapter focuses on popular cultural representations of evil in the newly developed, quintessentially 20th century, art form: cinema.
