AbstractIn an age of the proliferation of international organizations and international agreements and an increase in the number of international actors, each time a new element is added, it is crucial to examine what, if anything, it is effectively bringing to the current global governance debate. This is the principal question we raised in the beginning of this book in critically inquiring about the future role of the BRICS countries in the concert of global governance. More concretely, this book translated this fundamental question about BRICS, as a young and recent addition to the international community, into four sets of questions. First and foremost, why should the BRICS countries cooperate at all? As a second question, it is necessary to assess where or in what areas they should focus their cooperation. Related to this, it is important to consider, as a third question, the precise means for their cooperation or how to cooperate in the areas chosen for cooperation. Fourth and last, what should be the objective of their cooperation and what purposes will it serve? Together, these four sets of questions should serve as the benchmarks for a critical assessment of what the BRICS countries’ role in the establishment of a future global governance system will be.
