Abstract | Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical fitness quotient and academic performance of teenagers (aged 12 to15) from different background in Macau. The sample included 182 boys and 102 girls from a private school of Macau. Methodology: Data were collected by physical fitness quotient detection methods and academic record. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one way ANOVA and Pearson product-moment correlation were conducted to explore the relationships among the variables. Results: Firstly, the physical fitness quotient of boys were significantly higher than girls’(p<.01)and girls’ academic performance were significantly better than boys’(p< .01); different grades showed significant differences in physical fitness quotient (p< .01); no significant differences in academic performance of different grades; there was no significant difference in physical fitness quotient, academic performance among teenagers aged at 12,13,14 and 15. Secondly, there were differences between two groups on student academic performance; the group of high level physical fitness quotient scored significantly higher than group of low level (p< .05). The group of high level health physical fitness quotient showed significant difference with group of low level health physical fitness in academic performance (p< .05); group of high level sport physical fitness showed no significant difference in academic performance. Thirdly, physical fitness quotient was positively correlated with sports physical fitness quotient, health physical fitness quotient and some subjects of academic such as algebra, geometry, computer and sports. Sports physical fitness quotient was positively correlated with health physical fitness quotient, some academic subjects such as algebra, computer and sports; health physical fitness quotient was positively correlated with sports physical fitness quotient, some academic subjects such as geometry, computer and sports; there was negative correlation between sports physical fitness quotient and English with a correlation coefficient of -0.12. Conclusion: The study found that both physical fitness quotient and academic performance showed significantly different in gender but not in age. And both groups with high level of physical fitness quotient and health physical fitness quotient are with significantly better academic performance than low level groups. Additionally, physical fitness quotient, health physical fitness quotient and sports physical fitness quotient are positive correlated with some academic subjects. |
