AbstractThe purposes of this study were to teach fifth grade students to become self-regulated writers in the normal classroom when writing narratives in Chinese. In this study, the teacher was the researcher, using the methods of participated observation, interviewing, thinking-aloud writing, and questionnaires to collect the information, developing the curriculum and instruction design of self-regulated writing. The conclusions of this study were summarized as follows: 1. When teachers teach children how to write, it is necessary to teach the knowledge of writing, including the text construction, rhetoric, punctuation marks and etc. 2. Both of writing cognitive strategies and writing self-regulated strategies should be included in the writing curriculum. 3. Limited writing could help children more easy to plan and write narratives. 4. After the writing instruction, the knowledge of writing, the self-efficacy, the attitude toward writing and learning writing, the motivation, self expectance, strategy attributions, the length of narratives and the quality of papers were all improved for most of the children in the class. Children also could use the knowledge of writing, writing cognitive strategies and writing self-regulated strategies which were learned in the writing classes in no limited writing. Finally, some suggestions for teachers, schools, and future researcher were proposed according to the results.
