AbstractMathematical tasks are central to students’ learning because “tasks convey messages about what mathematics is and what doing mathematics entails” (NCTM, 1991, p. 24). Accordingly, task design and analysis is an important basis for a mathematical teacher to understand content knowledge and develop his/her pedagogical content knowledge. The systematic approach to design and analyze task play critical roles in knowledge development of a teacher. In this paper we present part of a study that investigates prospective teachers when solving a mathematical task using the onto-semiotic approach (OSA). This is, a systemic tool developed by (Godino, Batanero and Font, 2007) to develop/ assess prospective teachers` content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge.
