Abstract

Background: High-volume endurance exercise (ENE) is a useful modality to improve glycemic control, but many individuals cite “lack of time” as a barrier to regular participation. High-intensity interval exercise (HIE) is a time-efficient method to induce physiological responses similar to ENE, but the optimum dosage needs to be established. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two different volumes of sprint interval cycling on postprandial blood glucose. Method: Twelve young healthy males (age: 22.3 ± 3.0 yr; BMI: 20.5 ± 1.8) volunteered as subjects for the study. The time-course changes (pre-, and 30, 60, 90, 120, 135 and 150 min post-meal) in blood glucose in response to a standard meal were examined. At 90 min post-meal, the subjects underwent: (1) Two Wingates (2W) - two 30-s all-out cycling efforts interspersed with 4-min active recovery, total 5 min; (2) four Wingates (4W) - four 30-s all-out cycling efforts interspersed with 4-min active recovery, total 14 min; and (3) no treatment - control (CON). Results: Blood glucose (mol.l-1) at 120 (4.6 ± 0.2), 135 (4.4 ± 0.1) and 150 (4.8 ± 0.1) post-meal in 2W and at 135 (4.6 ± 0.1) and 150 (4.8 ± 0.2) post-meal in 4W trial was significantly lower (p<0.05) than the corresponding values of CON (5.7 ± 0.2; 5.4 ± 0.2 and 5.3 ± 0.2). Blood glucose concentrations at 120 (4.6 ± 0.2) and 135 min (4.4 ± 0.1) post-meal in 2W trial was also (P<0.05) lower than the corresponding value of 4W (5.2 ± 0.2 and 4.6 ± 0.1). Conclusions: 2W and 4W starting at 90 min after meal demonstrated similar trend in accelerating the decrease in blood glucose concentrations in young healthy males, but the 2W seemed to be superior to 4W, although 2W is more easy to perform and less time-consuming. These findings highlight the potential for less time-consuming HIE to improve glycemic control.
