Abstract | This paper outlines the historical background and current development of music education in China. According to the revision of the national curriculum guidelines in 2011, the author also detailed analyse the value of the national standards to the different school levels; how the national standards affect teachers and schools; and how much the teachers look at/follow the guidelines in China. Moreover, assessment is a valuable, efficient and necessary way to evaluate students’ learning achievement. In this research, the author also investigates and examines how the assessment policy and practice used at Chinese music classrooms from the elementary school, middle school to high school in the nation. Furthermore, how local music teachers assess their music students and the effectiveness of the national curriculum guidelines used in music classes for music teachers will all be discussed in this paper. |
