AbstractMany researchers have proved that rurality hinders students’ educational and occupational aspirations. Barcinas (1989) believes that students from urban areas usually have higher educational and occupational aspirations than rural students. Peterson (1978) states that adolescents from large urban communities usually demonstrate better self-confidence than adolescents from rural areas. Moreover, Knutson and Fisher (1989) indicate that with the development of rural areas, educational opportunities are improved. All of the preceding shows how significantly rurality can influence education. Indeed, rural areas are usually economically disadvantaged and lack sufficient resources in many aspects. Under these poor conditions, it is usually a challenge to attract and retain qualified teachers. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether music achievement of rural students is significantly different from urban students, as well as if educational resources are different between urban and rural regions in Taiwan. The researcher examines not only current sixth-graders’ music competency, but also the teaching contents and teachers’ assessment methods from the two areas.
