Abstract | The everyday life in the city is experienced with loads of objects, be they priced or inexpensive, significant or simple, whose meanings are very often forgotten. Indeed, objects, common and old, are always being ignored and excluded from discourse. Drawing, an art activity preceded in both Eastern and Western fine arts cultures, is normally seen as secondary as compared to other art forms. Such practice might even be considered old-fashioned with present day innovative technology. While both banal objects and drawing are regarded fringe, I have deliberately taken them up into practice. To Jacques Derrida, from the outset, perception belongs to recollection; for most practitioners, the subject of drawing/painting comes from their recollections. Through drawing with timeworn objects such as old chests, old locks, old keys and withered fruits, all of which have nurtured me in one way or another, I aim to trace my memories and to examine their cultural implications. I am conveying Michel Foucault’s concept of the heritage of ethnography is indeed an inexhaustible treasure house not of styles and artifacts, but of ideas and concepts.
