Abstract

Laser surface alloying was used to fabricate TiNi-xCu (x = 9.4 to 26.0 wt%) coatings on Ti-Ni substrate by controlling the thicknesses of preplaced Cu layers and laser scanning speed. The obtained results showed that the microstructure, hardness and corrosion behavior of the coatings depend on the Cu content. In the coatings, the volume fractions of Ti2Ni, TiNi2Cu and β-Ti increase significantly with the increment in the Cu content. The comparisons with the Ti-Ni alloy showed that the TiNi-xCu coatings exhibit a noble shift in the open-circuit potential. However, TiNi-26.0Cu presents the highest corrosion rate due to the most unstable passive film and the preferential dissolution of the largest amount of TiNi2Cu.
