Abstract | In this study, the surfaces of M2 and D2 tool steels were modified using friction stir processing (FSP). The microstructure, hardness, corrosion and wear resistances of M2 and D2 in annealed, quenched+tempered and friction stir processed (FSPed) conditions were investigated and compared. FSP induced martensitic transformation, dissolution and fragmentation of carbides, and retained austenite in both tool steels. Consequently, the microstructures of the FSPed tool steels were markedly distinct from those of annealed and quenched+tempered ones, characterized by finer grains, high content of martensite with some retained austenite, and increased content of passivable alloying elements in the matrix. The results showed that both FSPed M2 and FSPed D2 possessed higher hardness (896 and 498 HV respectively), higher corrosion and wear resistances than those of the annealed and quenched+tempered ones. |
