AbstractIn the domain of English language teaching, the foremost responsibility of educators lies in meticulous planning, followed closely by the instruction of learning strategies and study skills to students, the assessment of students, and, ultimately, the act of teaching itself. Drawing from over two decades of experience as both an ESL/EFL teacher and a teacher educator, I have observed a prevailing tendency among English teachers to prioritize teaching over planning and training in study skills. However, in today's educational landscape, such oversight is no longer sustainable. English language teachers must recognize the profound impact of extramural out-of-class informal language learning opportunities and large language models like ChatGPT on the planning and language learner training aspects of their professional duties. In this keynote, I discuss these pertinent issues by stressing the critical role of English teachers in connecting in-class language instruction with out-of-class language learning and use. Additionally, I define the concept of “prompt literacy” and underscore the importance of utilizing classroom time to train students with prompt literacy skills when using emerging technologies such as ChatGPT.
