Abstract | Writing Hanzi (Chinese characters) can be one of the most challenging tasks for Chinese language learners. With the development of information and communication technology (ICT), e-writing or digital writing has become an increasingly popular modality for producing Hanzi. To synthesize current understandings of the role(s) of typing in Chinese language learners’ literacy development, this chapter reviews the literature on e-writing in teaching and learning Chinese as a second/foreign language (CSL/CFL). Findings from this line of research reveal that Pinyin-based typing supports Hanzi learning by enhancing sound-form-meaning connections and strengthening phonological awareness, phonological-orthographic and phonological-semantic links. Additionally, in terms of Chinese composition writing, the use of an e-writing-based approach not only helps improve learners’ overall writing performance but also enhances the quality of various specific indicators in writing, such as essay length and accuracy in Hanzi production. Based on this evidence in support of e-writing, we recommend a transition to a new pedagogical approach to L2 Hanzi instruction and offer potential future research directions in teaching and learning Hanzi. |
