During this academic year Dr. Puente-Ballesteros is coordinating “Hybrid Gulansu: Histories and Stories of a Port City” by Ms. Han Qijin 韩奇金 that was implemented in the spring semester 2019 in the “History Students’ Space (HSS).” This academic space of learning was created by Dr. Puente-Ballesteros so that History students had the opportunity to organize their own exhibition within the SCEaR/UNESCO MoW framework of the Galleries. 2017-Present, Coordinator and designer of “The Galleries: Sources, Voices, Histories.” This permanent exhibition in the hallway of the Department of History of the University of Macau has been inspired by the Renaissance concept of “Kunstkammern” (cabinets of curiosities or wonder rooms). While stressing the importance and value of the great variety of primary sources available for historical research, the Galleries combine scholarly activities with esthetic dimensions and build a bridge between the student community and academics. The whole project is the result of fifteen months of corporate work during which Dr. Puente-Ballesteros had both the challenge and the pleasure to coordinate the efforts of over hundred collaborators including department members, administrative staff, undergraduate, graduate, master and PhD history students, colleagues from other UMAC faculties, external advisors from Chinese, European and American universities, librarians, archivists, clerks, as well as designers, artists and craftsmen. “The Galleries: Sources, Voices, Histories” is honored to be a collaborative project with the Sub-Committee of Education and Research(SCEaR), UNESCO Memory of the World Programme(MoW).***Dr. Puente-Ballesteros will use the Galleries to build a bridge between FSS and UMAC on the one hand and schools in Macau on the other, thus creating a network of didactic institutions linked to initiatives already encouraged by SCEaR, UNESCO MoW. This is based on the firm conviction that awareness of Cultural Heritage starts from education in schools and universities, not to mention in a city like Macau, a living museum honored since 2005 as UNESCO World Heritage Centre. 2017-2018, When typhoon Hato hit Macau, the installations of the Galleries were largely destroyed, but barely one month later were again reconstructed through the collaborative efforts of academics, students and artists coordinated by Dr. Puente-Ballesteros. The news of this achievement were globally spread by the SCEAR/UNESCO MoW webpage, thus turning the Galleries and the University of Macao’s community to a reference for academic ethics. In this climate of generosity Dr. Puente-Ballesteros could count on the commitment of the well-known Macau artist and calligrapher Choi Chun Heng (Cai Chuanxing 蔡傳興) who designed unique calligraphic masterpieces especially created for the Department of History in order to support this spirit of achievement. Master Choi's work of art entitled “Reflections on The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons” has been showcased at UMAC during 2017-2018. Image

2017-Present"History Students’ Space.” Within the framework of the “The Galleries: Sources, Voices, Histories,” this initiative coordinated on an annual basis by Dr. Puente-Ballesteros aims at encouraging history students to introduce their own historical sources and therefore to participate in the reconstruction of historical memories. This year Ms. Deng Yingxin 鄧穎欣and Ms. Xue Hui薛惠, two of our excellent Master students, arranged an inspiring panel entitled “Beautiful Adverts: Cigarettes, Drugs and Wines” in which they showcase and explain original Chinese advertisements from the 1950s and 1960s, while on the same time reflecting on the role played by consumerism culture in the construction of modernity in China.
